Pravalli’s Solar Lifeline

Greening the Desert

Sustainable Farming with Solar-Powered Irrigation

The Thar Desert—one of the most arid and neglected regions in Pakistan—faces a harsh reality. Once every 2 to 3 years, it goes through prolonged droughts with no rainfall for months on end. These recurring dry cycles create severe famine-like conditions, causing widespread suffering among both people and their livestock. Traditional farming becomes impossible. Water becomes a luxury.

A Lifeline Through Solar Innovation

In response to this crisis, Pravalli Welfare Trust has launched a transformative initiative: Solar Irrigation Systems for poor farming families. These systems draw underground water using solar energy, requiring no fuel, no grid electricity, and minimal maintenance—making them ideal for remote desert environments.

Each installed solar pump has the capacity to irrigate 2 or more acres of barren land, enabling families to grow staple grains like wheat, millet, and vegetables, with average yields of 80+ maunds per season. This not only provides food security but also a sustainable income stream for families that were previously dependent on aid.

Impact on Communities

  • 32 solar irrigation systems completed

  • 3 more systems under construction

  • Serving dozens of families across Thar’s hardest-hit tehsils

  • Reviving fallow land and promoting community-led agriculture

The project is proving to be a replicable model for other organizations and communities. With minimal cost and high yield, it encourages self-reliance, revives traditional farming culture, and reduces migration during droughts.

How You Can Help

Every solar pump transforms not just a field—but a future. By supporting a solar irrigation scheme, you enable entire families to break the cycle of drought, debt, and displacement. Your contribution becomes a source of clean water, food, dignity, and long-term resilience.
